Need a break from over thinking? This tip will help bring you back to earth.

So we all know that our minds need to keep going all day every day to help us make decisions, to work out right from wrong, to think about what we want for the future and so much more. I could obviously go on and on, but I won’t.
I don’t know about you and everyone else, but I don’t mind the chatter some of the time, but occasionally, I just want it to Shut up!
‘Try meditation’ I hear people say… I know meditation helps with that, I really do, and sometimes I do use that, but sometimes I just don’t feel like it. I want something else. I want to distract myself instead. Not with mind numbing T.V or Facebook, although they have their place in my life too, but with something that is therapeutic and helpful. I want to be distracted without wasting my time, if that makes sense.
I was always searching for that secret thing that would help switch my mind off for a bit and keep me in the present moment. I have come to the conclusion that there is no one set thing that will fix it, but there are quite a few things that can help. I read the book ‘Power of now’ by Eckhart Tolle and found it to be a little confusing and hard to read, but got some great tips on learning why our minds do what they do and what works to help it, instead of fight it.
I highly recommend the ‘Headspace’ app. Especially for meditation and going back to sleep. It has 10 free 10 minute meditations. The guys voice is very calming and I love that it is only 10 mins! You can also purchase more meditations specific to what you are after too if you like.
Writing can be good. But only if you like that sort of thing. Similar to reading that is supposed to relax you and distract your mind, if you don’t actually enjoy reading books like myself, it won’t be much help.
But, my most favourite thing to do, that works every single time… is Gardening.
All you need are some gloves, garden scissors and some weeds and you’re good to go. Weeding in particualr really brings you in to the present moment as you become completely focused on what you need to do. There is something quite satisfying about pulling weeds out too. Put on your old trackies, a tshirt, weather permitting of course, find a small area to start with and just start. Pull out some weeds and focus on even the smallest little ones, until it’s all clear. Then if you want to do more, move onto another small area and start again. It is also great to clip back plants that need a trim and to give them shape, but this is generally a little more strenuous.
If you don’t have a big garden to maintain, and live in an apartment for example, I would recommend buying a small plant box and planting some herbs or flowers from seedlings. Planting something, looking after it and watching it grow is quite satisfying and relaxing too. Before you know it, you might even develop a bit of a green thumb like I have ;)
If you give this a try, I can almost guarantee that it will not only turn your mind off, but make you feel more relaxed. You will be getting outside more, which will get you some much needed vitamin D, plus it is immediately a mood booster. You will get a little exercise from it and enjoy the break it gives your mind while you do it.
Let me know your thoughts and I would love to hear what you find helps turn your mind off for a little bit too.
